And finally there's a suspenseful love story. Two men fall in love with Isabel, and the outcome is doubtful to the very end.
Wilkie Collins had a weakness for women and in his maturity kept two mistresses at once. However reprehensible his morals, his appreciation of women resulted in vital, appealing female characters. The physical charms and winning ways of Isabel are beautifully portrayed. Even eccentric sixty-year-old Lady Lydiard comes across as an attractive and magnetic character.
I loved My Lady's Money and would recommend it to anyone fond of Victorian authors and early detective fiction. The Dodo Press edition offers a pleasant reading experience.

Not one of Collins' best works
I love Wilkie Collins as a rule but this was the only book of his I didn't get in to. Thank goodness it was short!
A short but very entertaining mystery of stolen money. It has very good characters and witty and humorous dialogue, one of Collins best.
I happen to lo e this author because get lost in his words. His characters, plots and prose flow together seamlessly.
I read only two of his books that were better Basil and The Woman In White.
need to escape into horse and carriage England with drama and mystery then Wilkie Collins is for you.
This was not one of Wilkie Collins finer stories. It's rather pedestrian and the tale is trite in some regards. When reading this book, I felt as though the writer was pressed for a deadline and cobbled this book together in a hurry and it didn't quite get there. It is one story where the mystery was no mystery - everything is laid right out there for the reader and it is disappointing.
Picture this, if you will - it's Thanksgiving and you are anticipating a great meal. The smells coming from the kitchen are magnificent, the table is beautifully laid and the crystal and silverware gleam in the lamplight. Every sense is finely tuned. Everyone sits and the meal is cold, the turkey dry as day old toast and the stuffing, gravy and potatoes are all instant and the vegetables came out of a can and the wine sour. You eat because you must, but you don't enjoy it. You hope that at least the dessert will be wonderful, since the cook has a reputation for fine desserts. But no, the coffee is instant and the dessert is a twinkie with strawberry jelly dumped on top.
What does this have to do with this book? It is just how I felt reading it, hoping for what I wanted and expected because of his other books. I closed the book feeling disappointed and hungry for a good story and my thirst for a good mystery far from slaked.
Again, the price is right, but that's all I can say to recommend it.
A lovely, but rather short story about a missing banknote in the house of nobility. Who is suspected of stealing it, who is above suspicion from the start because of rank and station in life, who will get to the bottom of this and find out the truth? About the importance of honesty, reputation, love and rank in society in the Victorian age,
Collins never disappoints, but keeps one interested and guessing throughout his well-written novels. His books were a recent discovery for me, and I'm finding his more enjoyable than most of the modern books which are too explicit with drugs, language, sex, violence, etc. But, he can take a very simple subject and make it into an interesting mystery because it's never transparent where the story is heading. This one was good as well, but perhaps the poor lady might have been a trifle disappointed after all?!
